- The process continues in the upper layers as the cells undergo changes in shape and function and finally form the stratum corneum - the skin barrier consisting of flat dead cells that are tightly packed together and have a waxy, oily substance between them.
- The final process is shedding, in which the cells from the outer layer of the epidermis fall off.
Any malfunction in the differentiation process will result in the creation of a damaged skin barrier, severe skin dryness, and even dandruff.
- Retinol affects the differentiation process of epidermal cells and the rate of their renewal.
- Alpha hydroxy acids also affect the rate of epidermal renewal and even help the shedding process by weakening the strong bonds between the cells of the stratum corneum.
- In addition, both retinol and alpha hydroxy acids affect the quality of the components of the deeper layers of the skin and hence the texture of the skin.
Therefore, the combination of alpha hydroxy acids in the correct concentration and pH level with retinol will produce good results on skin texture, even skin tone, and skin moisture.
