למרוח שכבה נדיבה ואחידה על כל אזורי העור החשופים, 15–30 דקות לפני החשיפה לשמש. לפנים ולצוואר ניתן להיעזר בכלל שתי האצבעות: שני פסי תכשיר לאורך האצבע המורה והאמה.

יש לחדש את המריחה לפחות בכל שעתיים בזמן החשיפה לשמש, וכן לאחר שחייה, הזעה או ניגוב במגבת. מריחת כמות קטנה מהנדרש מפחיתה משמעותית את רמת ההגנה.
